Is your child’s first period still years away, or could it be just around the corner?

You may have noticed some changes in your child’s body, like breast development, pubic hair or vaginal discharge, and started wondering when their first period might arrive.

Or perhaps nothing much has changed yet, but you’d like to know when to start preparing.

The good news is that there are some signs that can help you work out how close their first period might be. You can read more about these in my article, 3 Signs Your Child Is About to Start Their Period.

This free first period quiz looks at your child’s age and puberty changes to give you a better idea of when their first period might start.

What will the first period quiz tell you?

By answering a few simple questions, you’ll:

  • Recognise the signs that a first period may be approaching.
  • Get an idea of the timing – whether their first period could be getting closer or might still be some time away.
  • Know when to start preparing so your child has time to learn what to expect and what to do.

Of course, no quiz can predict the exact date of a first period. Every child’s body develops at its own pace.

But understanding the changes can help you plan ahead.

Why prepare before their first period?

A first period can happen at home, at school, during sport or while your child is staying somewhere else.

When your child already knows what a period is, how to use period products and who to ask for help, they’ll have practical knowledge to draw on when it happens.

And preparing doesn’t have to mean one big conversation. You can explain things in small steps, giving your child time to ask questions, practise and get used to the idea.

If you’re looking for more information, my Period Talk page brings together helpful articles about first periods, period products, books and preparing your child.

The earlier you begin, the more opportunities you’ll have to help them prepare.
