The best puberty books for boys

If you’re the parent of a boy (or a child with testicles), you will hopefully find this parent guide to puberty books for boys very helpful. You’re sure to find the perfect puberty book for your child here!
Books help to make talking about puberty with your child a lot easier. It will provide them with age-appropriate information they can understand and is relevant to their stage of development. Plus, the right book will help to prepare them for the changes that will soon be coming their way.
Most of the books that are marketed as being for boys assume that your child has these reproductive organs – penis, testicles, scrotum etc. So they’re not what you would call ‘gender-diverse’ or inclusive.
You will find two lists of puberty books for boys in this book review list:
- The books that don’t mention sex. They only talk about puberty.
- The books that do mention sex or sexual intercourse.
A lot of parents ask me about books that include intact penises, i.e. penises with a foreskin. So many of the book reviews will share what type of penis is visible. The rule of thumb, though, is that books from the USA will usually only show circumcised penises, whilst books from the rest of the world will show both intact and circumcised.
So which list should you look at? The books that include sex, or not?
That’s up to you! Your child will usually cope with whatever book you give them, but sometimes it is easier to give the books without sex to younger kids. Especially, if they are resistant to the thought of puberty or are easily overwhelmed by change.
NOTE: Before passing any book to your child or reading it with them, you should read it yourself first. I might think it is a great book for a certain age child or that the information is valuable, but you may disagree. Try to choose books that reflect your values and the messages you want your child to receive.
New books for children about puberty are constantly being published, so please contact me if you know of a book that should be included in this list.

A NOTE ABOUT PUBERTY, SEX AND GENDER. Sex and gender exist on spectrums, and most puberty books don’t reflect this spectrum as they are binary (boy, girl). This page uses the term ‘boy’ to refer to children who are cisgender i.e. a child who was born with testicles and identifies as a boy. So, the puberty books for boys are about the changes that happen to bodies with testicles, and they assume your child is cisgender. Click here to learn more about sex and gender.
