The best puberty books for girls

2 girls ready to read some puberty books for girls

If you’ve walked into your local bookshop to find the best puberty books for girls, you probably walked out feeling overwhelmed, as there are a lot of books out there on this topic!

This post has pulled together the puberty books for girls that are up-to-date and easy to find. You’ll find books written specifically for girls or kids with ovaries and books for both boys and girls. I’ve included this latter list because of parent demand.

Most of the books that are marketed as being for girls assume that your child has these reproductive organs – vagina, vulva, uterus etc. So they are not what you would call ‘gender-diverse’ or ‘inclusive’.

You can sort these puberty books into two lists. The first list is the books that don’t talk about sex, with the focus being on puberty. The second list is the books that talk about puberty as well as sexual intercourse.

So which list should you look at? The books that include sex, or not?

That’s up to you! Your child will usually cope with whatever book you give them, but sometimes it is easier to give the books without sex to younger kids. Especially, if they are resistant to the thought of puberty or are easily overwhelmed by change.

NOTE: Before passing any book to your child or reading it with them, you should read it yourself first. I might think it is a great book for a certain age child or that the information is valuable, but you may disagree. Try to choose books that reflect your values and the messages you want your child to receive.

New books for children about puberty are constantly being published, so please contact me if you know of a book that should be included in this list.

You can find more children’s books about puberty, in the main list of puberty books.

Puberty Books for Girls

You’ll find a list of books for girls about puberty. All of the books on this topic are currently showing and you can filter them by their target audience, girls or all children, as well as whether they do or don’t talk about sexual intercourse. Inclusive puberty books are in a separate list.

Just click on the filter, and the appropriate books will appear.

If you find this list overwhelming, have a look at my favourite puberty books for kids, as these are the books I am always recommending to parents. Or choose from my recommended books.

A NOTE ABOUT PUBERTY, SEX AND GENDER. Sex and gender exist on spectrums, and most puberty books don’t reflect this spectrum as they are binary (boy, girl). This page uses the term ‘girl’ to refer to children who are cisgender i.e. a child who was born with ovaries and identifies as a girl. So, the puberty books for girls are about the changes that happen to bodies with ovaries, and they assume your child is cisgender. Click here to learn more about sex and gender.
