Best Children’s Books about IVF (assisted reproduction)

blocks spelling IVF

I have had lots of requests from parents about creating a list of IVF books for kids. So this list contains the books that explain sperm donor babies, egg donor babies, surrogacy and adoption. As well as the others methods of assisted reproduction – IVF (in vitro fertilisation), IUI (intra uterine insemination), and ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection).

Some of these books will focus on one method, whereas others will explain a number of different ways to make a baby (or start a family). So whether your child was made via assisted reproduction, made with a donor egg and/or sperm (or embryo), was grown by a surrogate and/or adopted (or fostered)… then you should find a book to suit.

I haven’t included books that briefly mention it, and have tried to include the books that are either focused on IVF or give a better explanation than most other books.

Picture books can be a great way to explain to your child how they were made, or how a new addition to their family was made. You’ll find IVF books for toddlers, as well as for children and even tweens. As well as books for children conceived through fertility treatments.

A great site from the UK that a parent shared with me, is DC Network. They sell a series of books called Our Story for children aged roughly 2-6yrs. We have versions for all family situations and cover sperm, egg, double and embryo donation as well as surrogacy. They also have a Telling and Talking series of booklets, for parents of children 0-7yrs, 8-11yrs, 12+yrs, Mixed Blessings, Telling and Talking with Friends and Family, Our Family and Telling and Talking 17+ (for parents with older children who haven’t been told).

As you can see, there are some fantastic children’s books (or picture books) that will help parents with explaining the unique way their child was made.

You will only find books in this list that are readily available at bookshops today.

You may also want some help with explaining where babies come from and/or how babies are made to your child.

You can find more books about different topics in the main list of Sex Education Books for Children.

And if you find this list a little overwhelming, you might want to look at the age-appropriate list of sex education books.

You’ll find more information about sex education in my Sex Education 101 page.

NOTE: Before passing any book to your child or reading the book with your child, you should read it yourself first. I might think it is a great book for a certain age child or that the information is valuable, but you may disagree. You need to choose books that reflect your values and the messages you want your child to receive.

These are some of the many assisted reproduction books for children that have been written. As I find more, I will add them to this list. They are all really good books that kids can read to find reliable and accurate information about love, sex and relationships.

Happy reading!
