Homeschooling sex education: A guide for parents
Welcome to my homeschooling sex education guide for parents who want to get started with sex education.
This guide is designed to help you navigate sex education for homeschoolers. You’ll find some of the best homeschool sex education curriculums and homeschool resources about sex education.
This homeschool sex education information will be helpful for all families, even those that don’t homeschool or unschool their children.
Sadly, most schools don’t offer sex education. If they do, often it’s not enough to educate your child with everything they need to know about love, sex and relationships. And even if schools did provide comprehensive sex education, conversations still need to happen in the home.
You’ll find more information about sex education in my Sex Education 101 page.
Let’s get started!
Homeschooling for Christian families
If you’re looking for homeschool Christian programs about sex education or puberty, then you’ll need to have a look at my blog post on Christian sex education. It has an extensive list of sex education materials created for Christian families.
If you are looking for books, look at my list of homeschool Christian books (about sex education and puberty). It’s an extensive list of resources, and some of the books can become a homeschool curriculum for Christian families.
Homeschooling for Muslim families
If you’re looking for homeschooling resources that incorporate Islam, then the best resource I have found is a blog post written by Firoza Osman, about sex education for Islamic families. It’s practical and will help you work out how to balance sex education with being a Muslim.
If you’re looking for sex education or puberty books, then have a look at my list of sex education books for Muslim children. It’s a small list, as there haven’t been many books published.
Homeschool sex education curriculum
If you’re looking for homeschool materials about sex education, then you’re in luck, as I’ve managed to find some for you.
If you’re looking for a homeschool curriculum in Kindergarten or early years level (and older), you might like the Primary School and Home School Guide. It includes lesson plans for 5-7 and 8-11 year old children.
If you’re looking for homeschool for the Elementary level, have a look at Colors of You: Lesson Plans for Teachers and parents about Sex Education and Identity. It includes 25 practical, fun and comprehensive sex ed lesson plans you can use in the family home.
If you’re looking for a home-schooling curriculum for teenagers, check out the Talk is Power Workbook. It’s a downloadable resource with many activities and lots of information on a wide range of sex-ed related topics for teens.
Another homeschool sex education resource is the 30 Days of Sex Talks, series of 3 books. They turn sex education into 30 conversations and are suitable for children aged 3-7 years, 8-11 years, and 12+ years. The publishers of this book appear to have a relationship with the Church of Latter Day Saints, but values are talked about (instead of religion).
If you’re looking for a homeschool sex education curriculum for tween and teens, then look at the Secondary School and Home Guide. It is suitable for 11-16 year olds and is comprehensive. It covers sexuality, values, healthy relationships, LGBTQ+, and sex & tech.
Justin Hancock from the BISH website in the UK has a Teach Yourself Sex Ed series of sexual education materials for teenagers, as well as an activity book that parents can use with their young person.
You’ll also find homeschool curriculums online on teacher sites like Teachers PayTeachers, Twinkl, and other teacher worksheets and lesson plan sites. I share some of my favourites in my guide to online sex education.

Homeschool resources (sex education)
Here, you will find some of the free homeschool resources about sex education that are available.
If you are looking for more home school resources for teenagers, then you might like the Sex Education For Teens Workbook. This is basically a book with sex ed info, activities (multiple choice, crossword, word unscramble, fill in the blank), with a simple planner and evaluation guide at the back. It covers a wide range of different topics from reproductive anatomy to STIs & BBVs, conception, peer pressure and bullying.
BISH in the UK is a sex education website for young people aged 14+ years (it’s also one of my favourite resources for young people). It has a Teach Yourself Sex Ed series of sexual education materials for teenagers. It’s a free series of 9 blog posts that includes consent, sexualities, gender, sex, relationships, bodies, porn, and understanding yourself. It’s a great resource for teens.
Outspoken Sex Ed in the UK created some free homeschooling sex lesson plans during COVID-19, to help parents with teaching sex education in the home. There is a lesson plan for ages 4 to 9 and 11 to 16. These are a fantastic free resource for families.
There are also lots of sex education pamphlets on the internet that may be helpful to use for homeschooling. Some are free, and some you have to pay for. The most reliable resources will be from the family planning or sexual health clinics or education departments (they’ll also be free). Here are some free sex ed pamphlets from Canada, sexual health info for teens from Australia, or online information from Planned Parenthood in the USA.
Don’t forget to also look at these resources pages – Sex Education Resources, Puberty Resources, and Online Porn Safety Resources.
