Your body and you. Body privacy by Anita Ganeri

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Your body and you. Body privacy by Anita Ganeri is a book for preteens about how to keep their body private and safe.

Your body is very special and it’s up to YOU when and how you want to be touched. In Body Privacy, find out how to stay safe, both in the real world and online, and learn what to do if you are touched in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable or bad.

This is a series of four books: Looking after your Body, Growing and Changing, Body Privacy, and You’re Unique. They take a less scientific and more PSHE-friendly approach and encourages readers to appreciate just how special their body really is. Core information on nutrition, exercise and sleep is balanced alongside more challenging issues, such as looking after your mental health, body privacy and how to have a positive body image.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hakanson, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. On my website, I help parents find an easier way to talk to their kids about love, sex, relationships, and growing up. One important conversation we need to have with our kids is about body privacy and safety. That’s why I want to tell you about this awesome book called Your Body and Your Body Privacy. It’s part of a series of four books that cover a range of topics, like online safety (but not pornography).

Let me show you what it’s all about. Sorry, I’ve had to record this video four times already. My camera and software keep acting up, and my dog Lucy is desperate to go outside and bark her heart out. But let’s focus on the book, shall we?

First, it starts off by explaining why your body is amazing and all the incredible things it can do. Then it talks about different kinds of touches – good and bad – and how some touches can make you feel uncomfortable or hurt you. Lucy, please, not now!

The book also talks about private parts and names them, although I do have a small issue with how they use the term vagina to refer to both the inside and outside parts. Remember, you can use the words you’re comfortable with and change them if you prefer. They also mention testicles and scrotum, so it’s good to have those terms covered too.

Next, the book discusses when it’s okay for a doctor to look at your private parts and emphasizes that you should never keep secrets about your body. It then provides guidance on what to do if someone touches you in a way you don’t like and talks about the feelings you might experience afterward.

Moving on, the book touches on online safety and the importance of staying safe on the internet. It briefly mentions grooming, which is a real risk, and also addresses cyberbullying. While it doesn’t cover pornography, it does remind kids to only take and share photos that they would be comfortable showing their parents or teachers.

Lastly, the book talks about mobile safety and how to take care of your phone. It wraps up by reminding kids that they are the boss of their own bodies and should always look after themselves.

I apologize for any distractions during this video. It’s spring here in Australia, and my allergies are acting up. Plus, my camera seems to be at a weird angle, making me look like I’m on a rocking boat. But hey, I’m not recording this for the fifth time! I have a huge pile of books waiting for me, so my throat will definitely be sore by the end of the day.

Overall, this book is fantastic for tweens who are in that in-between stage. It helps them remember the important things they need to do to keep their bodies safe. So, cheers to that!
