Your Body and You. You’re unique by Anita Ganeri

Book Review

A short overview of this book

Your Body and You. You’re unique by Anita Ganeri is a book for preteens about how diverse and unique our bodies are.

Do you have curly hair or straight? Brown eyes or blue? Maybe you wear glasses or braces or use a wheelchair? You’re Unique takes a look at all different things that make us all individual, and explains just how you became you. It also reminds us that every body is amazing and should be cared for and respected.

This is a series of four books: Looking after your Body, Growing and Changing, Body Privacy, and You’re Unique. They take a less scientific and more PSHE-friendly approach and encourages readers to appreciate just how special their body really is. Core information on nutrition, exercise and sleep is balanced alongside more challenging issues, such as looking after your mental health, body privacy and how to have a positive body image.

Hey there! I’m Cath Hak, and welcome to Sex Ed Rescue. On my website, I help parents find an easier way to have those important conversations with their kids about love, sex, relationships, and growing up. And you know what? Books are a fantastic tool for having these discussions. So today, I want to talk about a book called Your Body and You’re Unique. The author is Anita Nagara, but you won’t find her name on the cover. Sometimes, book companies hire authors to write for them, but it’s still a great book, trust me!

Now, let’s dive into what this book is all about. It starts by asking some fun questions. Are you a boy or a girl? How tall or short are you? What color are your eyes? Is your hair curly or straight? It’s all about celebrating our unique features and helping kids appreciate their own bodies.

The book then goes on to explore how our bodies are built. And what’s cool about this book is that it’s not too childish, but it’s not too wordy either. It’s just right for those in-between ages. It uses simple illustrations to explain things like our skeleton and muscles. Without our skeleton, we’d be flopping around like a sea animal! And trust me, that’s not a good look.

Next, the book talks about how we end up looking the way we do. It explains that we get certain traits from our parents, like red hair or certain eye colors. But here’s the thing, families come in all shapes and sizes. It’s not just about looking like your mom or dad. Families can be made in lots of different ways, and that’s totally cool!

The book also touches on eye color, hair color, and skin color. It explains why these things vary from person to person. And you know what? It’s all about celebrating our differences. We’re all unique, and that’s what makes the world so interesting!

Now, let’s talk about our brains. They’re pretty amazing, right? The book explains how our brains work and have different jobs. Most people’s brains work in similar ways, but sometimes, we do things in our own unique way. And you know what? That’s something to be proud of!

The book also tackles body image. It reminds us that no two bodies are exactly the same shape and size. It encourages kids to accept and love the body they have. Feeling positive and happy about our bodies is so important. We’re all different, but we’re all equally amazing.

So, after reading this book, take a moment to look in the mirror. What do you see? Embrace your uniqueness and be proud of who you are. This book is a great tool for parents to have those important conversations with their kids.

I hope you found this review helpful. Cheers!
