Welcome to my curated list of the best children’s books that challenge gender stereotypes!

The trend today, regarding talking to kids about gender, is not to stereotype.

By stereotype, I mean that we don’t allow society to dictate how they should express their gender. The days of boys not being allowed to wear pink or play with dolls are slowly changing.

Today, many parents allow boys to wear pink and play with dolls or trucks or whatever they want to play with. Children are increasingly being allowed to express their gender how they want to.

We also know that letting a boy wear a pink tutu won’t make him grow up to be gay. This is a question parents still ask me, as they interpret feminine behaviour or liking toys for girls as an indication their child is same-sex attracted. And although the world is a changing place, homophobia does exist, and I have found that this concern is often based on protectiveness (and not discrimination).

Find practical tools to educate kids about sex education in the Sex Ed Shop

If you’re looking for a book on a different topic, look at my main list of sex education books for children. It includes over 40+ topics!

You’ll find the gender-positive children’s books in a separate book list.

You’ll also find more information about sex education on my Sex Education 101 page.

NOTE: Before passing any book to your child or reading it with them, you should read it yourself first. I might think it is a great book for a certain age child or that the information is valuable, but you may disagree. Try to choose books that reflect your values and the messages you want your child to receive.

Children’s books about gender stereotypes

You’ll find an age-specific list of children’s books about gender stereotypes. All of the books on this topic are currently showing.

All of the ages are visible, regardless of whether they’re relevant (or not). If no books appear for your chosen age, then it means there aren’t any relevant books.

To find relevant books for your child’s age, click on their age, and the appropriate books will appear.

These are some of the many children’s books about gender stereotypes that have been written. As I find more, I will add them to this list. They are all really good books that kids can read to find reliable and accurate information about love, sex and relationships.

Oh, and please do let me know if you know of a book to be added to this list!

Happy reading!
❤️ Cath
