Best puberty books for 8 year olds

Here, you will find puberty books for 8 year olds that will give your child the right amount of information.
You might have an 8 year old who is showing some early signs of puberty, and you want to start preparing them for what’s coming up. Or maybe your child is oblivious and unaware that puberty is on the horizon. Regardless of why you’re here, it’s important to choose a book that will prepare your child for puberty without scaring them.
The puberty books for 8 year olds that are listed here all meet the following criteria:
- It has to be at the right reading level.
- It has to be simple and not overwhelm kids with too many details.
- It doesn’t talk about sex or sexual intercourse.
For 8 year olds, puberty books need to be simple and not overwhelm kids with too many unnecessary details. At this age, all they need to know is what puberty is and the changes that happen.
If your ‘gut instinct’ is that your child may be overwhelmed by puberty and the changes it’ll bring, then consider saving the ‘sex’ conversation for another time. Overwhelm happens, and sex can sometimes be another thing for them to worry about. So focus on puberty first, and once they’re more accepting of it, then you can start talking about sex. You’ll find a filter in the book list so you can find the puberty books that do (and don’t) talk about sexual intercourse.
NOTE: Before passing any book to your child or reading it with them, you should read it yourself first. I might think it is a great book for a certain age child or that the information is valuable, but you may disagree. Try to choose books that reflect your values and the messages you want your child to receive.
New books for children about puberty are constantly being published, so please contact me if you know of a book that should be included in this list.

A NOTE ABOUT PUBERTY, SEX AND GENDER. Sex and gender exist on spectrums, and most puberty books don’t reflect this spectrum as they are binary (boy, girl). This page uses the term ‘girl’ to refer to children who are cisgender i.e. a child who was born with ovaries and identifies as a girl. So, the puberty books for girls are about the changes that happen to bodies with ovaries, and they assume your child is cisgender. This page uses the term ‘boy’ to refer to children who are cisgender i.e. a child who was born with testicles and identifies as a boy. So, the puberty books for boys are about the changes that happen to bodies with testicles, and they assume your child is cisgender. The term ‘inclusive’ is used to refer to puberty books that are inclusive of gender diversity, making them suitable for nonbinary and transgender children.
